A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT
RICH GRAY rhgray@comcast.net 906-484-2301 248-652-8109 winter number
GREAT NEWS THE WINTER DREDGING PROJECT HAS BEEN COMPLETED!
THANKS TO:
1) Jay Hills for leading this project to completion.
2) Stan Kownacki for the initial permit and getting approval to dump the dredged material on his property. This saved us a lot of money!
3) The membership that donated additional funds for this project.
4) The entire membership --- because $5.00 of your annual dues is allocated to support projects at the Marina Park.
5) Rudy Sherlund Inc. for the outstanding work and competitive pricing.
This will make a significant improvement in the bottle neck shallow area at the entrance to the Marina.
SAD NEWS: I was shocked to hear about the passing of our good friend and neighbor Cliff Deaner. I had just met with Sue Deaner in Ann Arbor to temporarily take over the Treasurer responsibilities while she spent as much time as possible with her son during his illness. Sue has decided to resign from the Board to focus on her family. We support Sues decision and will miss her contribution.
Before I could obtain and learn the software to do the Treasurers responsibilities, my mothers health went from poor but stable to untreatable and she passed away on 3-16-11. Fortunately Dorothy Thon has agreed to take over the Treasurer responsibilities. THANK YOU
OUR PROJECT LIST:
1) We need to finish the Pavilion at Meads Landing.
The board has approved a change in the build sequence of the Pavilion at Mead's Landing. In order to accommodate the work schedules of Jay Hills ( electrical lead ) and Dave Sheldon ( design and construction lead ). We will complete the concrete floor on June 17, 2011.Weplan tocomplete the electrical, ceiling and trimthis fall. I will review the budget and funding status at the annual meeting on July 2, 2011.
Although we received $590.00 of additional donations since the last newsletter, we will need additional donations to finish the Pavilion at Mead's Landing this year. We plan to recognize the current members, all additional donations and the construction volunteers with a plaque on the building. In addition, we plan to have a name plate posted on the building for donations of $100.00 or more.
Please send your initial or additional donations to:
SMP Association
P.O. BOX 266, Hessel, MI 49745
OR DROP IN THE GREEN BOX AT THE MARINA
We need Dave Sheldons continued help and expertise to finish the Pavilion at a cost we can afford.
THANK YOU DAVE
2) Dredging WINTER DREDGING COMPLETE! We should recognize that the dredging will need to be maintained.
3) Zoning - Deed Restrictions - and Code of Conduct - As in the past the SMP Association and,
therefore the Board, does not have (and I would not want) ANY enforcement authority. However,
the Board does have a responsibility to make sure that the membership is informed so that they can make appropriate decisions to avoid or resolve issues. We are in the process of posting our Bylaws, Deed Restrictions and Conduct of SMP Property Owners and Users
4) Planning a future circle drive and parking across the road and ditch from the marina.
5) Planning a future nature walk on the property across the road from the marina.
If you have additional projects and initiatives please contact a Board member to become part of the team to complete the project.
In closing my report, I trust you agree that the SMP Association has delivered by maintaining our association property and implementing improvements that can be enjoyed by all members and their guests. I encourage members to continue to actively support the Association with your annual dues,
additional donations for projects that you support, and your input and effort to maintain and improve our Point. I also must remind those few property owners that are not current with their annual dues to pay their dues so they can enjoy the use of the Marina - Park at Meads Landing and the Gate to Search Bay.
Thanks for your support.

A WORD FROM THE Vice-President
Rev. Duane G Thon djthon@hotmail.com
Dear friends on the Point,
This will be my last report to you as my time serving on the Board has come to a close. It has been an extreme pleasure to have served the dues paying members of our Association.
My will is that the new Board will continue to carry on the team concept and have a vision for the future that will make this beautiful peninsula an even more desirable place to spend the summers or even all-year round.
There are so many great ideas on the planning board that hopefully will come to fruition. The current and recent past Board members have been a joy to work with as they have all had a positive attitude and a desire to work together for the common good. And, they have put words into action that have resolved into positive results. The list of achievements is too long to list here. I am sure you can see them as you look and travel around the Point. My hope is that if you have an idea or suggestion you will let one of the Board members know. I am sure they will seriously consider it and take action if it improves, enhances, or is beneficial to the Point.
Best wishes to you all,
Duane G Thon
SECRETARYS REPORT
Marilyn Kraft MAKIronside@aol.com 906-484-2476
To be able to communicate this meeting, we used a conference call. Sounds classy, but Phil from the Point and yours truly in Ohio connected with Rich and Jay, who were sitting in Richs truck down below in the parking lot of a fast food joint!
Discussion was on the following topics:
1) Open Board Positions for the 2011 meeting. Two year terms, can be two consecutive, and then hold off for a year and you can be voted back on.
2) Newsletter
- Dorothy will be setting the due date for the Spring Newsletter
- We need to confirm the Newsletter that we will mail by US Post Office (as agreed at the 2010 annual meeting) and the content to all property owners. Go out in May? (Next meeting in the middle of May)
3) Target date to complete Pavilion electrical, ceiling and trim.
-As a result of last newsletter, we picked up $480 for the pavilion and $240 for marina. We are about $500 shy of Pavilion electric. Looking at possibly May for electrical. Have to discuss with Sheldon, but maybe June for ceiling and trim. Will either trench to a pole or if see they will put in a new pole. Outlets will be as many as possible. Concrete may cost a projected $2,000, hope to have this done by the fall.
A personal letter may go out to complete, if needed. The people of the point are very generous in giving for the marina, which is becoming a real meeting place now for the point. Uses of the pavilion should be shared or scheduled. Shared is defined as more than one person on the point wanting to use at once. Follow state laws and code of conduct. Hours available, 8 a.m. - midnight to be available for usage, possibly 8-4 or 4-midnight. Needs more discussion. A proposal will be put to the meeting in July.
4) We should be thinking about the recognition plaques on the Pavilion: (choices)
- laser etched metal plate 6x 24 for 65.00; - laser burn on wood; - pavers in the concrete floor; - printed page under glass; - cast brass; - engraved bricks; - etc. Phil is not crazy about recognition. Do on paper first. Discuss at annual meeting. Marilyn will format.
5) Winter Dredging Project
Jay is coordinating.
- Final plan and quote. Sherlund is doing the dredging. Water levels are low, so there is concern. Contingency plan -- if additional funds are required to complete the work. (Allotted money for dredging and half the marina fund will pay for 2445.00 and 2600.00 is bid. There are people who will still be donating money to the cause.) If it comes up the lighter stuff can be treated with a diagram pump. Jay put stakes in the marinaice was about 14 inches deep. Jay will try to be up for the dredging, but its based on temperatures. The permit will be mailed to Phil, in case he cannot be there. The weather has to be above freezing.
6) Treasurer
Sue Deaner has had a very rough year with the loss of husband Cliff and her son having cancer. Rich has temporarily taken over the treasurers job. It is all on the computer with books to back up. Some tax issues need to be worked through. 2007 IRS and 2009 needs to be looked at. Two EIN numbers need to go down to one. Since we are nonprofit, that should help.
7) Other Items
Phil is on the zoning commission (since the passing of Carl Rich) which works in conjunction with agricultural, forest, recreational, and residential. Waterfront residential is a new category. Zoning and planning is what they do. He is on the zoning board. It should establish the waterfront as our front yard44 setback from the road, but what about the lakefront. Phil will get back to us on variations.
Its great to have someone on the inside who knows our hopes and concerns.
Next meeting we will probably be on the phones again.

MARINA REPORT
Jay Hills jhills5272@aol.com 248-804-5670
Another boating season is just around the corner and I cant wait to get out on the water. Actually I was on the water the early part of April during a trip to Arizona, It was so surprising to see how many people have boats and how little water they have to use them. Once we were on the lake Sharon said it looked like a flock of Geese fighting over a mud puddle. What a wonderful resource we have and to think we have our own private Marina.
You have to admit there is something special about being close to the water, it becomes part you. Its a kind of kinship that lake dwellers, boaters, anglers and semen share. It will be sad to start this season without one whom we all shared this with: A friend and neighbor. We will miss you Cliff. I look forward to toasting him and sharing his life with all of you all on the beech this summer.
May 2011 issue of Travers Magazine, with Jay Hills on the cover kayaking in the Les Chanuex Islands. |
Some changes at the marina took place since you pulled your boat out late last summer. We have a pavilion (a place we can call our own). And most recent we dredge the canal, which was the most difficult area to navigate. This project was a while coming and much needed. A project first permitted by Stan Kownacki extended by John Abbot and again by myself. I would like to give a special thanks to Sherlunds Excavating who were so willing to work closely with
us on this. Hopefully now with a little help from Mother Nature we will again be
able to navigate from dock to lake again.
We will continue to improve our marina, as all ways, this year. Some of the
upcoming projects are: Annual marina clean up day will be May 21st, pavilion electrical early May
(see Jay Hills), continuing pavilion ceiling and soffits (see Rich Gray). We are also in the process of permitting an annual dredging permit. This permit will allow us to do work more often in lesser amounts so as to cut cost and keep future dredging to a minimum. Also we will be pursuing a bridge across the creek and annex parking across the road.
As always we value your input and concerns.
Till we see you Happy Boaten

Environmental and Archival
Control of the invasive reed-type plant, Phragmites australis, in Les Cheneaux.
Phragmites control options are being developed to provide guidance for property owners interested in controlling the growth on their shoreline. Also of importance is control of phragmites stands along roadsides and places other than shorelines.
Non-chemical control methods will be encouraged, especially for smaller infestations. Based on our 2010 survey findings, non-chemical methods should be applicable for the majority of LCI phragmites infestations.
To help clear up confusion on the part of our survey team and to help us provide accurate identification for the community, samples of local native, non-native and presumed hybrid phragmites have been sent to Cornell University. Our samples will be identified by Cornell and USDA experts using classical plant identification methods and also by DNA analysis.

POINT HISTORY STORIES
By Sara Nettle
In thinking about the Point and its History I thought of asking my Brother Karl Gene Mead age 86 about his early recollections. So here is a snip-it of that conversation.
Gene is the eldest son of Harold and Ann mead - Big Brother of family of 7 children. A WW II Veteran and has vivid recollections of the early times/days of St. Martins Point development. After returning from his military service Gene first visited the Point in 1946. Along with buddies and family they worked clearing the area for development. The buddies were Bob Goodwin and Russ Kippen. Family helping Alton and Peggy were Uncle Roy and wife Isabell, our father Harold Mead. Ben Carpenter was on the scene also.
It seems Alton and Ben was friends from Harrison, Michigan days. They went North in 1942, purchased property and started a Saw Mill and clearing the road going North from Altons. They cut trees down and sent them off to market. Gene drove the horses pulling the dray "wood hauler" to get the eight foot pulp logs to the beach where they were loaded on boats.
During those early years Alton went back and forth to Harrison where they were running a small restaurant, "The Dome", to keep things financed. In addition Alton kept working on the Point and even plowed snow at Kinross for income. They were tough times. One of Genes favorite stories was when Uncle Alton bought into the venture in 1942 he left Aunt Peggy a note "going north - can come or stay".
Remembering Ben, he said that he loved to play Gin Rummy and he kept score and always won. This leads one to ponder fondly about Politicians! Seems Ben knew everyone in the State. He was a colorful character and ticked Aunt Peggy off on occasion. Even though he was a rascal he was good hearted and very good to his friends. Bens wife Anna was a lovely lady and well liked by all.
Alton had lots of help from family and friends during this time. Many eventually purchased lots and built their dwellings. Some of the friends were from the days he had worked at Chryslers in Detroit. Art Todd and Jack Elliot and Frank Hurley were deer hunting pals. Zenaus and Sadie Smith too. Sadie really liked to hunt. Others were from Harrison area and family connections. Our Cabin Neighbors: Durwood and Beatrice Ash and Charlie and Billie Gellish. There was Roy and Alice Johnson - Aunt Peggys brother. The Webbers and Clapps, friends of Aunt Velma Altons Sister. Vic and Honey Kingsley from Livonia, who was Genes Land Lord at one time. The list goes on but time has run out for now. As most Meads would say put a smile on your face, have a sing a long and if all else fails play cards. Thats all folks.
Sara

A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT
RICH GRAY rhgray@comcast.net 906-484-2301 248-652-8109 winter number
CONGRATULATIONS. PHASE 1 (Structure and Roof ) of our Pavilion at Meads Landing was completed on October 16, 2010. The following information and pictures are from our web site www.stmartpt.org . Please visit the site for additional pictures and information.
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED MAKE THE PAVILION A REALITY
IN JUST THREE DAYS!!
Crew of Point Residents: (Left to right) Professional Contractor & Head of Pavilion Construction Planning Dave Sheldon and helpers Gary Koben, John Hills, Association President Rich Gray,
Jim Cornwell and Bob Kraft.
Others who helped were area contractor Lloyd Peacock, and point residents Sue Deaner, Dave Sudol, Steve Sudol, Sue and Dale Beutler with their daughter Aimie and husband Doug Brewer. Also thanks to John Crawford for using his auger to do the post holes.

Picture taken from Pavilion of Marina
Again I want to thank Dave Sheldon for taking the lead in the design and construction of the Pavilion. I also want to thank the following:
1) The SMP Membership
2) Individuals and families that contributed additional money to support the Pavilion.
3) The Swing Set and Sand Box Relocation Team - Stan Kownacki, Bob Smith, Jim Cornwell, Jay Hills,
John Hills, Leo Valko and of course Gary Koben and his Kubota
4) Mike Gay and Taylor Lumber for their support in providing the materials at the best possible price.
5) Bob and Marilyn Kraft for providing refreshments, snacks and lunch during the construction.
6) Local and Federal Government for their support in obtaining the necessary permits.
DAILY CONSTRUCTION HIGHLIGHTS
DAY ZERO - Material delivery and Post Hole Digging
Expectation - This should be a very easy day. Just meet the Taylor Lumber truck and watch John Crawford and his tractor dig the post holes.
Reality - With the arrival of the second truck and amount of construction material for the first time, I was concerned that we would not have enough volunteers to complete the job and immediately started to make phone calls to confirm the volunteers until Dave assured me we would be OK. Then to add to my concern, the post hole digging did not go as I had expected. We had two of the ten holes that John was not able to dig because of huge thick heavy metal from an old steam shovel. We either had to move the Pavilion and re-dig all the post holes or clear the two holes of the metal obstructions. Dave immediately made the decision that we would use a metal cutting torch to cut through the metal so we could clear the two holes. Fortunately, John Crawford had the equipment and Gary Koben had the skill. This was a job that we would start in the morning. Now for the other eight holes that John was able to quickly dig with his tractor and auger we still had to remove most of the dirt with manual labor. We worked until dusk and dropped our tools at the site. I ended the day with a great dinner at the Kobens and took an Aleve to ease the pain of some long forgotten muscles that I was re-acquainted to.

DAY ONE October 14, 2010 Start of Construction
Expectation - We would set the posts in the previously dug holes and proceed with construction.
Reality - Gary used the torch to clear the metal from the two holes while the rest of us dug out the dirt from the remaining holes until Dave approved the hole for depth and diameter. We would not begin to set posts until after we had completed a lunch that the Krafts provided. We ended the day with the ten posts set in the ground and the headers in place. We were confident and talked about finishing on Friday and canceling the Saturday work day. Fortunately, we decided to wait until Friday noon to make the call to cancel the Saturday work day.

DAY TWO October 15, 2010
Expectation - Finish Phase 1 of the Pavilion.
Reality - This was a terrific day. Everything went smoothly, and we even had Lloyd Peacook (a local contractor) stop by to donate his afternoon to help Dave with the over head work; however, at the end of the day we still had much more work to do.

DAY THREE - October 16, 2010
Expectation - Finish Phase 1 of the Pavilion
Reality - Another good day, but as we finished yet another lunch provided by the Krafts, we had not started to install the metal roof and with only the afternoon left many of us questioned: Should we start the roof now or delay work for another weekend ---or even wait until spring? Dave convinced us that we would be able to finish by the end of the day - so we continued. Steve Sudol arrived and began helping with the braces. The first piece of roof insulation was caught by the increasing wind and ended up in the trees between the Pavilion and the Point Road - we would have to be careful. And at this point Dave was working on the roof alone.
Fortunately, Dave Sudol arrived and immediately went up on the roof to help Dave. Later, Sue and Dale Beutler with their daughter Aimie and husband Doug Brewer arrived with Sue Deaner and began to help. Then sooner than expected, Gary Koben was cutting the last two metal panels to size and we were done - except for the clean-up which was handled by Jim Cornwell and Gary Koben with the assistance of our new neighbor Rod Stevens.
This was a great project. We worked hard to complete Phase 1 of the Pavilion and I enjoyed every minute. It was fantastic to see what our association can accomplish and terrific to see the pictures on our web site.

Several days later, from Rochester Hills, I began to hear reports of a forecasted wind storm across the Great Lakes Region soon to be named the Great Lakes Cyclone of 2010. I was concerned. Could our Pavilion stand the first test?
First, I called Dave Sheldon. I then called Phil Milan for confirmation that our insurance would cover wind damage, and it does. I also called Jim Cornwell and Gary Koben because I knew they would keep a close watch on the Pavilion. And, I prayed.
Well the winds came as forecasted - 72 mph across the Straights. The Bridge was closed, trees fell, the port-a-john at Meads Landing blew over, but the Pavilion stood strong!
SO WHATS NEXT?
1)We need to finish the Pavilion at Meads Landing. We are still short approximately $1000.00 to
complete the electrical, ceiling, and trim which are planned for the Spring of 2011. We will need and additional $2000.00 for the future concrete floor.
I want to thank Dave Sheldon for taking the lead on the final design and construction. We would not have been able to build this year without Dave and we need Daves continued help and expertise to finish the Pavilion at a cost we can afford.
2)Dredging - Please contact Jay Hills if you would like to support this initiative. The Board has
authorized funding for winter dredging this year.
3)Zoning - Deed Restrictions - and Code of Conduct - As in the past the SMP Association and
therefore the Board does not have (and I would not want) ANY enforcement authority. However, I
was recently involved in a situation which has convinced me that the Board does have a responsibility to make sure that the membership is informed so that they can make appropriate decisions to avoid or resolve issues.
4)Planning a future circle drive and parking across the road and ditch from the marina.
MERRY CHRISTMAS! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

A WORD FROM THE Vice-President
Rev. Duane G Thon djthon@hotmail.com
My friends and neighbors, sometimes friends is a very loose term for acquaintances. However, recently I found a new way to recognize what this word really means. As residents of St. Martins Point we are blessed with people who are far more than neighbors, they are truly friends.
I was in a situation of almost un-reconcilable solutions when two men on the Point made it possible for me to resolve my situation and they asked for nothing in return. I am sure others on the Point have their own similar experiences they could share.
On my most recent visit to the marina (Meads Landing) I couldnt help but observe the new pavilion and vision its completed form and how so many uses it will provide for our members, especially those who have worked so hard to make this vision come true. This is, and now is the time, to join the Association to take advantage of its many benefits; for only $40 a year. So why dont you make the right decision now fill out the Membership Dues Form at the end of this newsletter and return it to the Association address or drop in the box at the marina.

Once again I would like to say how well this Board is working to focus on the projects and events that will be of most interest to all our members. The Board leadership is strong and continues to receive frequent words of appreciation for hard work and achievement of goals and objectives. I also am recognizing a renewed positive attitude of friendship, cooperation, and involvement by so many of the folks here on the Point.
Not long ago we arrived to our place and found a large tree downed, by a high wind storm, in our front yard. The next day we were trying to cut off the branches and log out the main tree with little progress because the chain saw was lacking in power and the chain was very dull. Suddenly a truck came up the road and stopped by us and a man got out. He came over to us and said, Can I help? in no time at all he used his own chain saw to totally disbranch and log out our tree. We had a good conversation, made a new friend, and realized that once again being a part of our community is truly special.
As I look forward to 2011, I cannot help feel great things will happen. Our members care and are so supportive and enthusiastic. There are so many plans on the drawing board and others gaining momentum for conclusion. So, pitch in wherever you can and as often as you can. Every little bit converts into big results. Warmly welcome new people and never stop property owners from being asked to join our fine fellowship.
Best regards,
Duane G Thon

The proposed phragmites survey of the Point has been accomplished by an aerial survey conducted by the responsible state agency and included all proximate shorelines and wetlands where invasive Phragmites is present. This was accomplished with new special detection methodology and relieved us of making a foot survey for this area. More information and mapping will be available shortly. Well keep you informed with more info next spring.

We have signed the snow plowing agreement with Ken Reid. John and Julie Crawford have been designated to make the call for services. If there are concerns, please feel free to contact me.
The Association Board would like to acknowledge and express our appreciation to Gary Koben and John Crawford for the hard work they undertook in clearing the road after the "Great Lakes Cyclone." We are grateful to have them as neighbors, and for the thoughtfulness, willingness and effort they have put in on the Point, both in the past and present.

POINT HISTORY STORIES
By Sara Nettle
My mother Ann Mead loved the Point and the Cabin unconditionally. What a gal and best pal. There are so many wonderful memories of her there I hardly know where to begin to recount them.
In the decade of the forties when we were first spending time there we were busy visiting Uncle Alton and Aunt Peggy. As time went on my folks purchased two lots and time was spent on clearing the site for the cabin and driveway. Mom worked like a beaver cutting down brush and trees - burning the burn piles, picking up rocks. Once the cabin was up life was a bit more fun.
The fifties were easier going. She always had fun things for us/me to do. If there were other kids around we made taffy, roasted marshmallows and picked berries for jam.. If she wasn't busy with stuff she would go out and work on the stone wall in front of the cabin. I can still see her out on the beach searching for dolomite rock that she would tap and break into flat pieces and haul them up to her wall project. The wall project remains today and occasionally it is refurbished a bit by family members who visit.
Mother started a journal of sorts during her stays at the cabin. She would note who visited, what the weather was like, was the fishing good or bad, who came and what they ate for dinner etc. She particularly like writing about a couple of exchange students thatvisited. We have maintained the journal writing to this day.Folks who visit write it, and it has been filled with wonderful memories.
Two friends who had places at the point were very special to her. Sadie Smith and Ted Clapp kept us all laughing as they visited backand forth. The three women truly had a special relationship. The fun and laughterthey experienced and shared was beyond compare.
As mom was a good cook and liked to cook there was always someone who liked to eat and she was in her glory.Dad caught the fish and mom fried them in the pan. Through all the decades mother cherished having the grandkids come to stay a spell. They all have stories to tell about their visits. One of the youngens has written a song about St. Martins Bay part of which goes like this "Grandma cookin' meals on that wood burning' stove, kids catchin' crawdads in the nearby cove, cool winds blowin' cross the freshwater sea, homecookin' never smelled so good to me ...'come and eat she'd say....at St. Martins Bay. My mother Ann Mead would love that song.
Until next time, Sara
